Course objectives

  • To show the purpose and importance of preserving the environment for tourism
  • To define the role and significance of applying sustainable development principles in tourism
  • To show the importance of tourism planning in accordance with the sustainability principles
  • To extract the measures and instruments which support the sustainable development of tourism

Course outcomes

Name of the learning outcomes set: Sustainable management of natural resources in tourism
  • Determine the fundamental resources of civilisation development based on natural resources, and compare the natural resources of Croatia, Europe and the world
  • Determine the causes and consequences of an irrational management of natural resources and non-compliance with the principles of sustainable development
  • Explain individual models of tourism development which try to sustainably manage resources.
  • Determine the link between the environment and tourism planning
  • Evaluate the importance of legitimate laws and regulations which ensure a quality management of the environment in accordance with sustainable development
Name of the learning outcomes set: Protecting the environment and preserving the natural ecosystem from excessive tourist burden
  • Analyse the effects of certain protection and conservation measures in the function of tourism development and sustainability.
  • Judge how certain regions in different stages of development face different problems and challenges stemming from doing business in accordance with ecological principles
  • Define the positive effects and pressures of the undertaken activities in the tourism offer and demand on space, certain aspects of the environment, natural ecosystems and on the local community
  • Explain the efficiency of certain environmental management systems, technological methods, and methods of managing processes within a business tourism environment, and offering services to guests.

  • Define the goals and purpose of introducing the concept of energy efficiency into rural tourism-catering facilities

The main features of tourism. The impact of tourism on the environment- social, economic and ecological aspect. Tourism and the environment- tourism resources, tourism and space, environment, ecology. The evolution of nature and environmental protection. Ecological policy and the causes and consequences of environmental pollution. The emergence and history of the concept of sustainable development of tourism. The principles of sustainable development. The legal regulations of sustainable development and environmental protection. The implications of planning and implementing sustainable development of tourism. The pressure of tourism on the environment: problems and trends. The connection between tourism planning, the prevention policy and waste disposal. Environment management systems. Energy efficiency. Improving energy efficiency in the tourism sector. The possibilities and perspectives of energy efficiency in tourism. The theory, approaches and drivers of Corporate social responsibility’s (CSP) development. The uses and positive effects of CSP and sustainable development. The limitations and the future of sustainable development and CSP.
