Course objectives

  •  to identify special forms of nature based tourism in a rural area,
  • to point out the trends and characteristics of the supply and demand of tourism based on nature,
  • to show the basic natural resources and other resource-attraction basis for the development of certain forms of nature-based tourism,
  • Use some interpretation tools with the purpose of increasing the pleasure of tourists during a visit or tour of the destination.

  • Explain and elaborate special forms of nature-based tourism.
  • Describe the characteristics of the demand market and the current trends in the market related to the forms of nature-based tourism.
  • Identify and explain the emerging forms of rural-based tourism.
  Name of the learning outcomes set:  Thematic paths, roads, trails and environmental interpretation
  • Evaluate attractive factors which can serve as the basis for designing thematic paths, roads and / or trails.
  • Develop a plan of possible thematic trails, roads and / or routes for a particular rural tourism destination.
  • Critically explain the concept of environmental interpretation and define the potential useful effects of interpretation content.
  • Analyze the role and importance of environmental interpretation in tourism.
  • Identify the possibilities and tools of interpretation of tourist attractions in tourism destinations.

  • Critically evaluate the importance and specificities of ecological agricultural production in organizing tourism activities in rural areas.
  • Identify and explain the forms of tourism activities on the agro-tourism estate considering the type of ecological agricultural production.
  • Explain critically the term permaculture and the possibility of using permaculture principles as the basis for the development of rural tourism activities.
 

Course content

The emergence, development and forms of rural tourism. The link between environmental protection and tourism development. Historical development of ecotourism and other forms of nature-based tourism in the world and Croatia. Natural heritage of rural space and tourist activities in nature. Current trends and the impact of nature-based tourism on the environment. Historical development and theoretical starting point of the thematic paths / road routes, trails. Identification and classification of natural resources and attractions in function of thematic paths. Thematic paths / roads as a means of valorizing rural tourism resources. Creating and developing thematic paths / trails. Special forms of theme trails / roads / paths in nature: hiking trails, wine roads, bicycle paths, educational paths, olive oil roads, aromatic herbs roads, experiences and tastes. Combining local / regional rural tourism offerings by thematizing tourist facilities. Thematic trails in Europe and Croatia. Interpretation of natural resources in the destination. Tourism activities in rural areas and the creation of bids based on "eco" and "bio" agricultural production. The importance and specificities of ecological production as an attractive actor in organizing rural tourism activities. The basics of permaculture. Perspective of permaculture development in rural areas.
