Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide introductory and basic knowledge on certain topics in the field of multimedia technology and multimedia systems. Introduces students into basic concepts, design and processing of multimedia data. Furthermore, the course objective is to introduce students to the compression and video compression methods.
Course outcomes
- Describe the main features of the human visual system.
- Distinguish and describe image, audio, and video formats.
- Set up and group procedures for compression of still image, video, and audio.
- Analyze media and Internet links, specify restrictions.
- Argument the parameters for multimedia transmission in different applications.
Course content
Introduction to multimedia. History of multimedia systems. Hypertext, hypermedia and multimedia. Examples of multimedia applications. Overview of software tools for multimedia. Sound / audio (sound digitization). Image file formats. Color in picture and video (basics of colors, color pictures in color pictures, color models in video clips). Video (analog and digital video signals). Compression of multimedia data. Compression methods: Entropy (Runlength, Huffman, Arithmetic, LZW), Transformation (FFT, DCT, DWT), JPEG image compression (algorithm, JPEG format, 4 types of JPEG format, JPEG 2000), video compression (H. 261, H.263, MPEG, newer MPEG standards), compression of audio tracks (simple audio compression methods, MPEG audio compression). Multimedia and the Internet. Limitations of the Internet as a Media. Specific formats of multimedia data - audio and video streaming (video conferencing, voice over-IP ...).
