Course objectives
It is expected from the student who finished this course that he/she knows the history of computer development (from the early mechanical computers to today’s electronic ones). Student will master basic logical frameworks and number systems (binary, decimal, octal and hexadecimal) and conversion from one to the other. It’s required from the student to know how to work on at least one operating system (MS Windows) as well as using office tools (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other software that generate documents (MS Paint, WinRAR). In addition to Windows, students will be also introduced to other operating systems, such as DOS, Linux, and MAC OS and to free alternatives to MS Office. Student will be familiar with data writing formats and their extensions. In addition to understanding how to work on a computer, student will be introduced to the basic concepts of online communication and understanding Internet (Internet services, Internet browser, e-mail etc.)
Course outcomes
- To analyze the core concepts in information technology and computing.
- To use basic work tools found in the Windows operating system (creating maps and documents and manipulating them, reviewing resources within the OS)
- To use basic work tool for making text documents such as MS Word (creating the document, editing the text and tables, creating page breaks, inserting page numbers, creating page folders, preparing for print).
- To use basic work tools for making spreadsheets such as MS Excel (creating documents, creating spreadsheets, using the basic functions, writing macros)
- To differentiate computer components and their appearance and usage.
Course content
Historical development of computing, basic logic circuits, number systems, operating systems, computing components, MS Office, network communication concepts, the Internet, e-mail.
