Course objectives

  • provide overview of basic concepts in the field of culture, cultural diversity, multiculturalism, interculturalism, intercultural competence and intercultural communication in tourism
  • Awareness of the impact of multiculturalism and cultural diversity on tourism activities
  • Recognize the intercultural dimension of tourism and the immanence of interculturalism in tourism
  • To observe the importance of intercultural competence of staff in tourism, and the importance of intercultural competence as a part of tourism culture
 

Course outcomes

After completing the course, students will be able to:
  • Establish basic concepts in the field of culture, cultural diversity, multiculturalism, interculturalism, intercultural competence and intercultural communication in tourism
  • Assess the characteristics and elements of the intercultural dimension of tourism and the immanence of interculturalism in tourism
  • Evaluate elements, constituents, dimensions and levels of intercultural competence and rank attributes of an intercultural competent tourist worker
  • Valorize the impact of intercultural sensitivity and intercultural competence on the effectiveness of intercultural communication of all actors in tourism (tourist workers, tourists, local population)
  • Compare patterns of intercultural communication in tourism on given examples
  • Critically evaluate the importance of intercultural competence of staff in tourism
  • Argue the importance of intercultural competence as a part of tourism culture
 

Course content

Determining the notion of culture. Relationship and interdependence between culture and tourism. Tourism and leisure. Tourism, cultural heritage and cultural-civilization heritage. Culture and cultural diversity. Multiculturalism and cultural diversity in the world, the European Union and Croatia. Building intercultural relations in multicultural societies. Intercultural dimension of tourism and the immanence of interculturalism in tourism. Intercultural communication in tourism. Intercultural competence as a prerequisite for effective intercultural communication. Dimensions, elements, components and levels of intercultural competence. Models of acquisition of intercultural competence. Intercultural competence of staff in tourism. The characteristics of an intercultural competency tourist worker. Intercultural competence as a part of tourism culture.
