Course objectives
Introduce to a student the basics of financial management and the theory and practice of financing large and small companies.
Course outcomes
- Present and link the basic concepts of financial management, structure and functions at the financial system level and finance of the company
- Determine the micro and macro environment and review the financial system
- Argue key features of short-term, mid-term and long-term financing under Croatian economic practice
- Identify the terms of stocks, shares, bonds and treasury bills and evaluate their values and their emission procedures
- Calculate the value of stocks, bonds, risk premium, expected returns, cash flows, return period, profitability index
- Determine the real value of money and the impact of inflation on the capital cost
- Calculate the time value of money (future and present value of an amount or more periodic deposits / payments)
- Assess project risk and choose optimal investment
- Analyze the indicators resulting from the analysis of the financial statements
Course content
Business objective and forms of business organization. Concept of time value of money (discounting and debiting, future value, present value, time value of multiple cash flows). Risk, return and model for determining the cost of invested capital (risk and financial management, risk, distribution of probability and dispersion measures). The financial environment of a company. Financial system in economy. Financial markets. Valuation and financial management. Deciding on financing (financing decisions, financial market efficiency, long-term funding). Capital structure and dividend policy. Capital investment planning. Risk assessment of investment projects. Short-term financial management. Work capital management, short-term funding sources. Cash management, accounts management, inventory management. Analysis of financial statements.
