Course objectives

The aim of this course is to get acquainted with possible measures to protect natural ecosystems, to identify the damage that business systems can cause to natural ecosystems and to encourage students to think about the possible development of business systems in the context of sustainable development.

Course outcomes

  • Determine the main pressures of economic activity on an area, individual constituents of the environment, the natural ecosystem and the local community
  • Identify and comment on the main environmental problems faced by the 21st century
  • Identify the main instruments of environmental policy
  • Understand the role of the concept of sustainable development in addressing the issues of development and environmental protection
  • Understand the function of individual environmental management systems in carrying out economic activities
  • Identify the role of management and knowledge in the implementation of nature and environmental protection policies
  • Identify international rules and bearers of international environmental protection activities.
  • Identify the legal basis and institutions in the implementation of environmental protection and sustainable development policy in Croatia
  • Analyze the effectiveness of environmental policy in Croatia
  • Explore and comment on the relations of human civilization towards the environment from the particular areas of environmental protection and management
 

Course content

The significance and role of ecology. Natural ecosystems and their protection measures. Environment and environmental policy. Environmental management systems. Environmental policy in developed and poor countries. Environmental management at the global and local level. Degradation of biosphere and consequences of degradation. Ensuring the full preservation of environmental quality and preservation of natural communities. Waste, waste disposal and waste management. Human impact on air, water and soil pollution and analysis of existing problems caused by unconscious economic development. Influence of genetically modified organisms on the environment. Human health, needs and rights in the context of environmental policy. Influence of civilization achievements on natural ecosystems. Environmental impact assessment. Sustainable development. Sustainable environmental management (TQM). Global and local environmental management issues. Business analysis of the company considering the environment in the context of sustainable development. Technological solutions of existing environmental problems.
