Course objectives
- Know the basic characteristics of tourism market and consumer behavior in tourism.
- Assess the assumptions of rural tourism development in Croatia.
- Identify and evaluate the factors of rural and other forms of tourism development for a specific area.
- Determine the economic and non-economic effects of rural tourism.
- Evaluate the importance of interest association in rural tourism for a particular destination.

- Identify the structure and functioning of the tourism industry and all the most important concepts related to the same.

- Identify key associations and organizations related to the tourism industry and critically analyze all existing forms of integration and business models within the world's tourism economy as well as the genesis of the emergence of the most famous brands.
- Critically evaluate the various current trends affecting the tourism industry.
- Forecast, with arguments, possible scenarios for tourism industry development in the future.

Course content
Development of tourism as a socio-economic phenomenon. Defining travel and tourism, the fundamental characteristics of tourism. Moving factors of tourism. Tourist needs and social development. Tourism market: demand, supply, brokers. Tourism destination. Contemporary trends in the tourism industry. Rural area: theoretical basis. Characteristics and tourism activities in the rural area. Role and importance of agriculture in the development of rural forms of tourism. Terminological definition of the term rural tourism. The specificity of rural space as a prerequisite for the development of rural forms of tourism. Rural tourism destination. Rural tourist profile. Classification of rural tourism. Influence of rural tourism on the host country: economic, social, cultural, spatial and ecological. Tourism as a rural development strategy: yes or no. Rural tourism: examples of good practice in the world and in Europe. Current state of rural tourism in Croatia: comparative analysis of the continental and Adriatic regions. Interest-based associations: theoretical considerations. Key features of interest grouping. Interest-based associations in rural tourism of the Republic of Croatia: analysis of the market situation. International and domestic tourism organizations. Organization of public and private tourism sector.
