Course objectives
Develop competencies such as the ability to understand and use the modern English language in speech and writing in business communication.
Course outcomes
- Properly use and combine present, past, and future verb tenses
- Properly assess which article to use in a particular situation (definite, indefinite, no article)
- Properly use idiomatic expressions related to business relationships
- Properly use the vocabulary related to the concept of brands, company structure, advertising, finance
- Discuss authentic advertisement ads and evaluate their impact
- Present your favorite brand (brand) and explain why it is successful
- Evaluate relevant foreign language data when employing a person, correctly use the terms in writing job adverts or writing letters of invitation to tender
- Compare the way you read numbers and different terms that include numbers in Croatian and English, use proper terms for describing business trends and charts
- Write short business-related e-mails while respecting the rules of informal and formal writing
- Assess the importance of cultural awareness in the business world (based on textual data and listening interviews)
- Identify the purpose and outcome of a telephone call, properly use the vocabulary related to the telephone appointments
- Based on the read text judge whether the assertions regarding the text and attitude of the author of the text are true or not
- Based on the arguments presented in the newspaper article compare the position of women in the business world before and today
Course content
Basics of English language and grammar. Pronunciation. Structure of the sentence. Types of words. Adjective comparison. Noun. Members. Tenses. Modal verbs. Basic terminology in the field of economics, transportation, management, marketing, accounting, banking, promotion and public relations. The most common business situations (presenting and meeting business partners, telephoning, business meetings, presentations, complaints and accountabilities, business contracting and negotiation), appropriate vocabulary and phraseology. Companies. Description of companies. Successful presentations. The basics of written business communication. Application for a job. Writing curriculum vitae. Conversation for getting a job. Selection of candidates. Understanding cultural and social diversity.
