Course objectives
- Analyze major macroeconomic theories and EU policy
- Evaluate the impact of common European policy on member states and candidates for membership with special regard to the Republic of Croatia
- Re-examine the costs and benefits of joining the European Union and European structural funds
Course outcomes
- Assess the effects of globalization on small economies
- Critically evaluate the types of economic integration and the consequences of economic integration on national economies
- Link liberalization of trade and competitiveness of economic sectors
- Identify what is the current budget, structural and cohesion adjustment policy
- Compare the labor market of Croatia before and after joining the EU
- Critically evaluate the position of the Croatian economy in the process of EU enlargement
Course content
Macroeconomics of the open economy and key economic policy. Globalization of the world economy in the 20th Century. Types of economic integration and consequences for national economic policies. The effects of globalization on small economies. «Convergence» among EU Member States. Key economic indicators of EU development and its members and comparison with major world partners. Trade liberalization - Economic consequences of removing trade restrictions. From the European economic community to the internal market. EU budget policy; the principles of financing and the criteria for using the EU budgetary resources. Structural and cohesion adaptation policies. From Werner's plan to introduction of the euro. Common monetary policy. EU expansion policy. Social Europe: labor markets, employment. Amsterdam and Lisbon strategy. Industrial policy of the EU. Foreign Direct Investment in the EU. The position of the Croatian economy in the process of further EU expansion.
