On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, a lecture on artificial intelligence titled “Artificial Intelligence Poiesis” was held, organized by the Center for Library Activities in collaboration with the Research and Development Center of Virovitica University of Applied Sciences. The lecture was part of the celebration of Book Night 2023, which focused on artificial intelligence under the theme “Do Robots Dream of Electric Books?”
The lecture was delivered by Marko Hajba, MSc in Mathematics, lecturer and head of the Research and Development Center, along with students Dora Fabijanić and Helena Jerbić. Although originating from computer science, artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving into a social phenomenon. Touted as the foundation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it presents a series of challenges and raises philosophical and ethical questions, the answers to which seem to be intertwined with the fate of humanity.
As we develop artificial intelligence and nourish it with human qualities, apprehensions arise regarding what or whom exactly we are creating and whether, as a civilization, we will lose something in the process. Literature, particularly the science fiction genre and dystopian works, has been offering possible answers to these questions for decades.
The mentioned speakers provided concrete examples to demonstrate how large language models (LLMs) such as Rytr and AI Poem Generator generate poems in less than a minute, using predefined parameters such as the use of literary devices, rhyme, and motifs. They also highlighted potential issues, including possible incorrect responses, security concerns, and questions regarding copyright.
Far from being a fantasy, artificial intelligence offers practical solutions to numerous problems in the modern world, developing useful products, services, and systems. Many of us use these advancements without even realizing it, swept up in the revolution that is leading us into a new era.
