Course objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of modeling, designing and application of wireless sensors. Introduce students with current technologies and their concrete applications. Understand the principles of work, architecture, applications, and protocols. Introduce the student with the advantages and disadvantages of wireless sensors.

  • Describe the basic protocols used in wireless sensors.
  • Explain the most important energy saving mechanisms.
  • Develop a specific usage for wireless sensors.
 

Course content

Introduction to sensor network technology: historical development, network architecture, implementation. Standardization. Technical features, required hardware and software components for a wireless sensor network. Establishing a wireless sensor network: the concept of communication, the problem of connecting nodes. Centralized and localized (distributed) algorithms. Topology control protocols. Wireless communication channel and channel access protocols (MAC protocols, energy-efficiency). Protocols for routing data in sensory networks. Energy saving mechanisms. Application of sensor networks: agro culture, e-health applications, monitoring of objects, challenges and solutions.
