Course objectives

  • Recognize the importance of special interest  tourism based on the particularities of a destination as a means of achieving competitive advantages
  • Assess potential for development of special interest tourism in a destination
  • To propose project ideas for the development of special interest  tourism in a particular destination
 

Course outcomes

  • Identify and explain contemporary trends in the tourism market and their implications in tourism demand and offer
  • Describe the profiles of contemporary tourists
  • Categorize types of modern tourist consumers
  • Define the tourism of special interests and its relation to mass tourism
  • Recognize the importance of tourism of special interest based on the particularities of destination as a means of achieving competitive advantages
  • Analyze examples of good and bad practices of tourism of particular interest in Croatia and in the world
  • Valorize the resource base of the tourist destination as the basis for the development of special interest tourism
  • Identify key market segments (market niches) for particular forms of particular interest tourism
  • Develop market communication methods for particular market niches of special interest tourism
  • Develop project ideas for the development of particular interest tourism in individual tourist destinations
 

Course content

Tourism environment. Global and local trends. Trends in the tourist market supply and demand. Analysis of qualitative and quantitative trends in tourism. New orientations in tourism. Massive vs. selective (sustainable) tourism. Profile and typology of contemporary tourists. Definition and general characteristics of tourism of particular interest. Specialties of motives, activities and experiences in special interest tourism. Tourist attractions as the basis for the development of special interest tourism. Types of special interest tourism. Tourist niches and their importance for creating competitive advantages of a destination. Communication strategies with special tourist niches. Examples of good and bad practices of tourism of particular interest in Croatia and in the world.
