Course objectives

Provide a review of basic concepts in the area of scientific research. Train students for the independent implementation of simpler research and writing, showing and presenting seminar papers  

Course outcomes

  • Shape the basic stages of the research process
  • Identify procedures and activities within the basic stages of the research process
  • Analyze the importance and role of ethics in the research process
  • Analyze the basic features of academic language and writing style
  • Shape the basic steps in the process of writing a seminar paper
  • Assess the appropriateness of the quantity of the documentation for the basis of  a work (used literature, notes / footnotes, illustrations)
 

Course content

Development and access to research through history. Research and research ethics. Methodological approach to research. The course and the main phases of the research process with the emphasis on professional research. Design of a research project. Methods of data collection. Arranging, processing, expert analysis and understanding of the collected data. Interpretation and discussion of research results. Basic features of academic language and writing style. Problems of plagiarism as the appropriation of another intellectual property. Basic features of professional and scientific papers with emphasis on professional works at higher education institutions. Structure, writing and technical training of seminar work. Collecting and studying literature, data selection, writing notes, annotations, quoting, and citation usage. Determining the structure and writing the draft version of the seminar work. Editing the final version and presenting the seminar work.
